What is the 'Internet of Things'?

Everything Connected

The 'Internet of Things' or IoT is a phrase used to describe the connection of intelligent devices and everyday items to the Internet.

As more things are being technology enabled it is becoming simpler to embed the power, radio and computing capabilities required for Internet connection.

This can literally mean connecting anthing to the Internet but some existing examples include:

Intelligent shoes and trainers

Contactless payment cards


Roadside sensors and technologies

Smart ICE, (in car entertainment), systems

Wearable medical monitors

Next-generation RFID tags, (for retail items, logistics etc)
